USEFUL TERMS
Beauty -> A quality that gives pleasure to the mind or senses and is often associated with properties such as harmony of form or color, proportion, authenticity, and originality.
Materialism -> The belief that all things including thought, feeling and will are made of matter.
Transcend -> To exist above and independent of.
MY THOUGHTS
If anyone were to say that nothing is beautiful, most would certainly agree that they are in some kind of emotional funk or depressed. Beauty is part of reality. What makes a thing beautiful is hard to nail down but we all have said wow that’s beautiful. Some of the objective qualities include symmetry, proportion, harmony, and balance. But where does this beauty come from? It was either created or it came about on its own. If it was created, we call this creator, God. If it came about on its own, then how?
Oceans, mountains, birds, people, flowers, trees… why do we find them to be beautiful? Not only do we need to answer what made them beautiful but we need to answer what made us recognize it. Biologically speaking the only theory that I know of is sexual selection. This of course first requires many mutations that result in a thing being beautiful. That’s a pretty absurd idea because it needs multiple tiny changes that serve as some kind of benefit over “millions of years” that leads to a final result that is symmetric, proportioned, harmonious, balanced, etc. Which was all random chance until at some point it became a reason for a mate to say wow I like that and select them. But how does the mate know to enjoy it? It doesn’t of course. The beauty needs to be there in the first place and the recognition needs to be there at the same time.
