THE SYLLOGISM
1. Things are either contingent or necessary.
2. The universe is contingent.
3. Therefore, there must be something that the universe’s existence depends (God).
USEFUL TERMS
Contingent - it may or may not be, it depends on something else.
Necessary - it must be, it is required.
Universe - all of space and time and their contents. It comprises all of existence, any fundamental interaction, physical process and physical constant, and therefore all forms of energy and matter, and the structures they form, from sub-atomic particles to entire galaxies.
MY THOUGHTS
This argument is presented differently by everyone... I think this is becasue it's too deep for most people. The idea that a thing 1-may or may not be or 2- must be, is difficult to imagine. However, with a little bit of deep thinking, we can see the evidence for God. In the framework of contingency and necessity, every single thing we know of is contingent, meaing it could posssibly not exist. There is no reason we can say that anything, including the univese must exist. Everything depends on something else. If they didn't depend on something else and they existed, we could say they are necessary. But we can't say that about anything. As well, we have no reason to believe that the universe (everything to most people) doesn't depend on something else. Some propose that there are multiple universes, which too may or may not be and depend on something else. Therefore it only makes sense that there must be a necessary thing in which the univese (or multivese) depends on... God.
